Since 1989 the tools I teach have helped hundreds of nonprofits nationwide become healthier, work smarter, and secure many millions of dollars in grant resources.

I especially love to work one-on-one with visionary leaders in small, emerging nonprofits who are struggling to do important work within a paradigm of limited resources.

Also available: High-value, very affordable, nationally-recognized trainings and workshops using my unique “modular” curriculum on topics related to nonprofit capacity-building and grants effectiveness. (These workshops are now owned by the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits for whom I work as a special consultant.) We are happy to offer any of our topics anywhere, as a community-based, open-enrollment program or working in-house in a closed-workshop environment. Among the more than 20 available “ready-made” topics are:

**The Logic Behind the Logic Model/The Essential Evaluation Toolkit: An All-In-One Framework for Program Planning, Design and Management
**Winning Federal Funding 2011: Tools, Strategies and Resources for Successfully Navigating the Federal Grants World
**Budget-Building for Grant Professionals: Building Blocks for an Unbeatable Proposal Budget - Guaranteed!
**The 90-Minute Grant Proposal: “Speed-Thinking” Your Way to a Clear, Compelling - and Fundable! - Project Concept
**The Grantsmanship Game: Playing to Win
**Grants Readiness: The Culture and Practices of Successful Grantseeking Organizations
**Capacity-Building Grants: Funding Your Mission from the Inside Out
**Power Writing for Nonprofits: Principles of Clarity and Structure
**Partnership Pays! Building and Sustaining Collaborations that Work

I make powerful cases for donor support. While my product is a case statement, my process is rooted in branding, messaging and storytelling. My firm, R.Bruer Company, is my second business in Portland. I co-founded a successful high tech marketing communications agency (McClenahan Bruer Communications), which I sold in 2006 to take my work into helping “the good guys” win. I am skilled at honing the messaging and stories of organizations to a fine point and bridging the emotional gap that can prevent organizations from engaging donors and other audiences. I am also an experienced nonprofit board member, including recent past chair of the Northwest Earth Institute and the Sustainable Business Network of Portland.

I first joined WVDO in 1987, began a four-year stretch on the board in 1989 and was board president in 1993.  After 32 years of helping non-profits organizations (primarily in the Northwest) fundraise over $152 million for worthy causes, I now show executive directors, development officers, finance managers, and purchasing agents employed by non-profits how to save money in their day-to-day operations through a membership in the Non-Profit Purchasing Group (NPPG).  As the Northwestern U.S. Member Advisor for NPPG, I would be pleased to show you and/or the appropriate person in your organization how the program works.  Just send an email to me with the words, “WVDO member needs more information” in the subject heading, and I will send you a “Member Checklist” listing 22 of NPPG’s 75 Vendor Partners, which includes a selection of products, services and general discounts presently available.  In addition, I will gladly provide you with temporary “Members Only” access to the NPPG website, so you can take a closer look at the many savings opportunities that are available from all of the NPPG Vendor Partners.  Let me show you and your organization’s leaders how to save money with vendors you may already use, cut costs by making select purchases from competing vendors, or save by “buying local” from an ever-increasing number of regional vendors.  As a special benefit to all WVDO members, your organization can receive three (3) FREE extra months of membership by joining NPPG for one year.

I will provide your organization with experience in local, state and federal grants and proposals; teaching grant writing at PSU; and serving on the grants review panel for a federal agency.
I love to create a compelling story: to gather program information, client data, background research, financial reporting and organizational successes and put it all together in a narrative that touches the hearts and minds of potential donors, clients and partners. I will tell the story of how your organization changes lives through the use of both words and the numbers, and I will do it the right way for each funder!
I offer reasonable rates, strong writing skills and a variety of options for writing individual grants, packages of grants or weekly support over a defined period of time.
You are making the world a better place, and I want to support that work.
